ELA Standards, CPALMS, and Newsletter Design

While looking at the ELA technology standards for firs grade, I feel that I am currently prepared to teach students about basic computer literacy. These things would include logging on to the computer, navigating kid-friendly websites, and using online practice websites for reading or math. I would need to learn more about using a SmartBoard or a Promethean Board. I had both of those types of technology throughout my schooling, but I have never really used it in the context of teaching, so I would need more training on how to actually operate the boards. Things that are also listed on the ELA technology standards list are websites such as StoryJumper, pixlr, and Mystorybook.com, none of which I am familiar with. I would have to sit down and go through these websites myself so I could learn how they work.

Within the CPALMS educator toolkit, there are many resources and tools to help teachers with all things in their classroom. The resource that I would use from the grade 1 Toolkit would be the STEM Lessons that are included in the Science section. I really enjoy science and I would love to incorporate as many STEM lessons and activities as possible. STEM lessons are also very interactive and teaches kids about working in groups and active participation. I would also use some of the lesson plans included to fill in any gaps in my own lesson plans or replace mine plans with a better one from the Toolkit.

While working on the Newsletter Design, I didn’t really acquire any new skills, as I already knew how to do all of the skills. This project was mainly a refresher of all the skills I learned in high school, but it was still a good activity for refining those skills. I really liked getting into the mindset of a teacher and really creating a concept for my future class. This sort of thing is what I have been dreaming of doing since I was a little girl, so it was great for me to put that dream into action. The only thing I had a problem with was the formatting of the columns on the second page of my newsletter, so I formatted it with text boxes. With the next newsletter, I could probably work on the second page of formatting and the color and shading of the different sections. From this assignment, I learned that you can definitely fit a lot of information on a single page, but it is also good to expand it to two pages so there is more room for fun graphics and color schemes.
